Recently I was showing a home where the owners are away for an extended period of time. As a preventative measure they had the thermostat set to 55 degrees for a 20+ degree buffer above freezing in case the power goes out. They also had the faucets running at a drip to keep water flowing through the pipes. Another recommendation is to open the doors under the vanity and the kitchen sink to allow the movement of air around the pipes especially if the plumbing is running along an outside wall. You may still have time to cut off the water supply to outside faucets but make sure that once you shut off the supply, you open the faucet to allow the water to drain out. Even if you have a "frost free" outside faucet, make sure the hose is disconnected to release any water that may be trapped.
