Henri Gourd 914-954-3897 henrigourd@bhhsne.com Have you ever noticed what looks like sawdust on the ground along the side of your house? If so, you should consider calling an exterminator. At our home this sawdust was under the trim or "rake" board that runs along the rooflin and covers the end of the clapboard siding. The trim became home to carpenter bees. A little smaller than a bumblebee, these insects search for unpainted surfaces into which they burrow and lay eggs and food for the next generation. They were able to access the gap left between the clapboards and the rake board and dig a channel starting on the back side of the board about 3/8 of an inch in diameter. Notwithstanding regular treatments by the exterminator for the bees, woodpeckers began attacking the trim to get to the eggs, so I had the wood pulled and replaced with trim primed and painted on all sides. It was not until we pulled the trim that the extent of the damage became apparent. To protect what may be one of your most valuable assets, you need to stay alert for signs of maintenance projects and address the projects early on to safeguard your property.
