To the Residents of East Haven MAYORAL CANDIDATE JOSEPH CARFORA An essential part of improving the quality of life for the residents of East Haven is having elected officials who are responsive and fiscally responsible. Earlier I told you about my proposal that East Haven have a computer system linked to every Town Department where a resident could file a Complaint about a condition such as a pothole, or a blighted property at any time of the day or night. To the extent that this 24/7 system accepts Complaints, it would also allow the response to the complaint to be tracked. The Mayor would also have access to the System. He ensures accountability and transparency. He sees to it that your tax dollars are being used to solve a problem in the best way possible. With that said, a critical front-line Department is Public Works. Everyone wants safe, passible streets and pristine sidewalks. Everyone wants beautiful parks and clean beaches and playgrounds that our children can safely enjoy without the risk of injury. But in the recent past, there has been too much money spent by the Public Works Department on outside vendors, underutilizing our talented employee pool, to the detriment of the East Haven Taxpayers Case in point: The Town outsourced the cleaning of its storm drains to an outside vendor, to the tune of $415.00 per hour, when it would have cost $12,500 to repair the town's "VAC" or storm drain cleaning machine The town similarly overspent on snow removal by stupidly hiring outside contractors, rather than using our own employees and equipment. The hourly rate alone for this service would have equaled the weekly salary of one Public Works employee. This makes no economic sense. It's not how I run my household or my business and sure it is not the way that you do either My proposal to fix this is simple: We improve the quality of life in this Town by giving people the ability to file a Complaint. We track the Complaint, and most importantly that Complaint gets addressed in a timely manner by our Town Departments, not and outside vendor. It's time we bring these services back in- house. We have a deep pool of talent in our own Department of Public Works. We have the tools and the equipment for them to do their job. They want to work. They take pride in what they do to address your concerns. I say, let them do their job and in the process save money and improve the quality of life in this Town for all of us.
