Artistic. Empathetic. Adventurous. Sister. Daughter. Addict. To summarize a person in just a few words is difficult, especially when describing a positive force like Martine Jehan. Many people knew she was an avid music fan, volunteer, and loved helping others before helping herself. Fewer knew the internal battle she waged against addiction since 19 years old. This stigma of silence prevented access further recovery resources; the less people who knew about her struggle, the less they could help on her journey to recovery.
Martine passed away at 26 years old. Eight years of fighting came to an end, but there was little sense of closure for the Jehan family. Her mother, Betsy, began Martine’s Wake Up as a way to heal while giving back to the sober living community. Each year, the event hosts more than 300 recovery allies for a sober night of music by the Driveby Blues Band, dancing, food from the Naples Pizza Truck, raffles, speakers, and fellowship. Through this network and annual benefit, we not only remember Martine, but put a face to the opioid epidemic.
This year’s event was on Friday, June 14, at Martin-Bishop Field in Guilford, CT. Many thanks to all of you who showed up to support addicts and alcoholics seeking safe lodging for their recovery.
