Tranquil Balance Offers Massage Therapy for Mental Wellness Anxiety is ranked the most common form of mental illness. The American Massage Therapy Associa- tion (AMTA)'s 2021 Massage Profession Research Report found that 27 percent of consumers who received massage within the last 12 months did so for relaxation and stress reduction. Each year sees new research linking mas- sage and mental wellness, particularly as it relates to chronic pain, sleep, and stress. I, Tina Von Flatern, am not sur- prised to see the words anxiety and depression reduction in addition to physical injuries as a reason for visit on our massage intake forms. As a massage therapist, I have to look at my client as a whole, physically, emotion- ally, and mentally. In my practice at Tranquil Balance, we see many people dealing with long- term physical pain and also dealing with depression and anxiety. We also see pre-natal women that list and voice anxiety reduction as they get closer to the due date. I also see clients who are going through or have gone through cancer treatment and dealing with depression and fatigue. Tranquil Balance Over the past few years, I have learned that no massage is ever dupli- cated. We all have our different modali- ties stuffed into our work bag so to say. One modality that I am passionate about is the lymphatic massage. A lymphat- ic massage increases the lymph flow throughout your body by conducting long rhythmic strokes to help heal and elicit a relaxing response. Another mo- dality would be the myofascial massage, which aids in the reduction of pain from a long-term injury. Here at Tranquil Balance, we are all healers and masters of massage therapy. I couldn't be happier in my field, to be able to facilitate the engage- ment of the parasympathetic nervous system, which contributes to wellness through its support of sleep, digestion, and relaxation. Beyond the research, the most important benefit of massage is human touch-to be able to provide safe empathetic connection via human touch. That is the ultimate gift to receive and provide.
