With over $90,000 being donated to local nonprofit organiza- tions this year-including the 10th Annual Backpack Giveaway held in July-the locally owned and fami- ly-operated Wireless Zone teams have been philan- thropically busier than ever in their communities. Four times per year, local franchise owners Scott Gladstone and Neil Ryan elect several charities. in their community that display extraordinary dedication to serve their respective organizations and fulfill their unique mission statements. The charities receiving second quarter grants in Connecticut are: $5,000 to Northeast Opportunities for Wellness, $10,000 to Burton & Phyllis Hoffman Foundation, $5,000 to the and $35,000 in Backpack Giveaways! The charities receiving grants in Rhode Island are $2,500 to the Frank Olean Center and $4,800 to Jonnycake Center of Westerly. Verizon Wireless Zone's Westerly store's gift of $2,500 to the Olean Center Art Therapy Program will benefit both children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing art supplies and equipment suited for those with mobility challenges. Easy-to-grip markers, desktops that fit on the arms of wheelchairs, and easels with telescopic legs will enable Olean's artists to express themselves in comfort and with dignity. Beyond the beautiful art- work created through the program, progress is made on attention, lessening anxiety and celebrating the completion of each assignment. To the Olean Center, the process is as important as the product.
