WITNESS STONES PROJECT IN WESTBROOK The Westbrook Historical Society, in conjunction with Mike Cyr, local amateur historian, the Westbrook Congregational Church, and Melissa Josefiak and her Scout Troop, are working with the Witness Stones Project to identify Westbrook's enslaved people, restore and recognize their history and honor their humanity with a plaque. They helped build our community in its earliest days. There will be four workshops held on the first four Thursdays in October at the Westbrook Congregational Church at 5:00pm. These will entail: 1. History of slavery in the North 2. Interpreting slavery through extant primary documents and anecdotes 3. Presentation of the five themes and uncovering evidence of one locally enslaved person 4. Restoring the history and honoring the humanity of the enslaved person through biographical writing, poetry, prose and visual arts Everyone in town is encouraged to attend and participate and contribute. We have already identified Toby as our person of interest. We will have the unveiling of his Witness Stone on Sunday November 3rd at noon. Witness Stones have been installed in New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. You can find them all along the Connecticut shore from New Haven to Stonington.
