CELEBRATING 28 YEARS! Welcome to My weekly series! THE LANDSCAPE PROFESSIONAL ASK Linda K. Lillie of Sprigs & Twigs Linda K. Lillie has been President of Sprigs & Twigs, Inc. for the last 26 years. She is a graduate of Connecticut College in Botany, an accredited NOFA Organic Land Care Professional, a Connecticut Master Gardener and a national award winning landscape designer for her design and installation projects We had a large pine tree removed from our lawn and the stump was ground. Now the grass does not grow very well there. Any suggestions? - Jennifer Hi Jennifer, The stump grinding wood chips that are left behind tend to suck the Nitrogen out of the soil as they decompose inhibiting grass growth. Remove the soil and any of the remaining stump grindings. Put down new top soil, seed, and starter fertilizer. Keep the area moist until the seed germinates (do not let it dry out). Once grass is growing, keep the soil well- watered until grass fills in entire area. Pull any weeds that may EMAIL OR MAIL YOUR QUESTIONS TO: info@sprigsandtwigs.net or Linda Lillie, Sprigs & Twigs Inc, PO Box 245, Gales Ferry, CT 06335 grow in the area. Make sure this area is nice and thick with new grass before summer comes, if not, weeds will fill in the bare areas. Normally, lawn grass goes dormant in the summer because of the heat and weeds grow great in the heat, but in your case, keep watering this area during the summer to encourage the grass to keep growing. Always cut your lawn no shorter than 3-1/2 to 4" all season to deter weeds and to increase the thickness of the lawn. If you need our help, give us a call Sprigs WE'RE GOING DIGITAL!
