She is a graduate of Connecticut College in Botany, an accredited NOFA Organic Land Care Professional, a Connecticut Master Gardener and a national award winning landscape designer for her design and installation projects. Hi Linda, I bought a 5 gallon weeping Yoshino cherry tree. I saw one, maybe three blossoms last spring. I really don't know anything about fertilizing. It's a beautiful weeping cherry tree, but I only get green leaves. It looks healthy otherwise. Please enlighten me. - Chuck Hi Chuck, The Weeping Cherry needs to be fertilized by the end of April with a slow release, organic fertilizer like Flowertone by Epsoma. It's available at Lowe's, Home Depot and your local plant nursery. It's a dry fertilizer and all you need to do is take a few handfuls and spread it around the base of the tree (not near the trunk, about a foot away from the trunk). This only needs to be done 1x/year in April. Make sure during the summer you water at least 1-2x/week, deeply, if you do not receive natural rainfall. No need to water in the spring or the fall. Water during the next three summers to help with establishment of the tree. After-5 years there will be no need to water except if there's a very dry summer. Remove any grass growing around the base of the tree and create a mulch ring around the tree. Use a layer of 1-2" of mulch in the ring to help keep the soil cool and moist, but make sure you do not place mulch against the trunk. Good Luck and enjoy your beautiful tree.
