CELEBRATING 26 YEARS! Welcome to My weekly series! THE LANDSCAPE ASKI PROFESSIONAL Linda K. Lillie of Sprigs & Twigs Linda K. Lillie has been President of Sprigs & Twigs, Inc. for the last 26 years. She is a graduate of Connecticut College in Botany, an accredited NOFA Organic Land Care Professional, a Connecticut Master Gardener and a national award winning landscape designer for her design and installation projects. Dear Linda - I'm hoping you can help us with our hydrangea dilemma! Up until this spring, we have had no issues with them and they have had beautiful, gorgeous large blooms. I am faithful, in removing old dead wood, watering and have applied Holly Tone. They did have buds that were green and swelling, in late March and early April. However, we then had a couple of nights that were below freezing! Almost all the buds are now dried up and fall off, if you touch them. We just do not have a clue, as to what to do. We would greatly appreciate your guidance and expertise! I have attached photos, for you to see what we are dealing with. Thank you for your time! Patty Dear Patty, There was a hard frost in March that killed the Mophead Hydrangea and Lace cap Hydrangea flower buds. So far this spring, I have received about a half a dozen letters about pitiful looking hydrangeas and I have seen the damage from Gales Ferry to Deep River. If you peel back the outside covering of the bud you will find a miniature green bud that has been 'frozen' in time. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do but cut back all the dead stems. If you have hydrangeas that bloom on new wood (this year's new green growth) you will have flowers this summer. If you have hydrangeas that bloom on last year's wood, you will not have any flowers this year. happy to help.
