Welcome to My weekly series! ASK PROFESSIONAL Linda K. Lillie of Sprigs & Twigs CELEBRATING 26 YEARS! Linda K. Lillie has been President of Sprigs & Twigs, Inc. for the last 25 years. She is a graduate of Connecticut College in Botany, an accredited NOFA Organic Land Care Professional, a Connecticut Master Gardener and a national award winning landscape designer for her design and installation projects. Hello Linda, I have this unknown plant that I CANNOT get rid of. It is very fragrant, colorful and pretty, but it has spread into my hydrangea plants, lily beds and even into the lawn. I dig it up, but the roots are very long and often break when I pull up on them. Do you have any suggestions? Is ruining my gardens. Thank you very much, Rebecca Hi Rebecca, The plant in question is Chameleon Plant (Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon'). It's a very aggressive, fast-growing groundcover for moist to wet sites that grows in Full Sun to Full Shade. There is no sure-fire solution to getting rid of this invasive plant. All bits of the roots need to be dug out. If any are left behind, new plants will emerge. Digging out the roots will be a multi-year undertaking until all signs of the plant are gone. I'm sorry that I really do not have a better solution for you.
