About
Cummings & Good design expression is a duality, encompassing two spheres of passion; the print world of images and typography and the sensual world of fabrics and textures, a literal "upstairs" and "downstairs" endeavor housed now in our 100-year old home on a hill.
Upstairs, in our graphic design office/print shop, we respond to various communication needs of several beloved non-profits and community organizations, as well as our own personal expressions of philosophical and political obsessions. Downstairs, in our studio/sewing room, we draw upon the resources of decades of materials and tools to fabricate new creations: appliqué prints, wiro-bound personal journals, hats, caps, cat toys, and most recently, masks.
The slightly polarized interests that have occupied our musings for the past 55 years originated in the early stages of our design evolution. Having met in art school in the 60’s, we both loved drawing and painting. Jan designed clothing and hats. Peter took the fabric and made appliqués and quilts. Together we fabricated dolls and toys, and as the pendulum swung, posters, packages, illustrations, identities and logo We were enthralled with the richness of woven and printed fabrics, as well as the visceral power of words and images.
Our design and art continue to evolve responding to the dynamic changes in technology, media, and popular culture that affect the way people respond to words, images, style and objects. Although the classic mechanical skills of painting, drawing, and sewing are still essential tools of our creative expressions, they have been augmented exponentially by the extraordinary means of the digital realm.
Throughout the years, our design priorities evolved, from a multi-disciplined design practice serving a variety of corporate and institutional clients, to a more personal and focused pursuit. Although we still accept selected commissions, our primary interest now is in creating graphics and products that are evocative, compelling and speak to our belief in the common good.
We bring our years of design concept and production experience to all our endeavors in a desire to inspire, inform and humanize the human condition.
