Peter Barrett is a prominent local attorney with longstanding and broad experience in probate matters. He was first elected to the position of Probate Judge for the Madison-Guilford District in 2014. Judge Barrett offers this insight: “Probate Courts provide a vital service to individuals and families often when they are at their most vulnerable. The Probate Judges work quietly, generally out of the public eye, to make sure that the laws relating to probate issues are followed. The cases are increasingly complex matters concerning estates, trusts, conservatorship, child custody and guardianship. My four years of experience handling hundreds of cases has been extremely valuable, as well as the extensive continuing legal education that I have completed. As a result, I am well equipped to serve as Probate Judge for the Madison-Guilford District and I would consider it an honor to continue to serve our community in this important position.” A resident of our District for 31 years, Judge Barrett resides with his wife, Jean. They have four children, Kate, Margaret, Michael and John. He has served on numerous boards and commissions including the Police Commission, Charter Revision Commission and Pension Committee. He is a member of both the Connecticut and the U.S. District Court Bars. He has also served as town attorney for both the Town of Guilford and the City of West Haven.
